DOVETAIL, John Trumpy and Sons contract #446 built in 1972 in Annapolis,
Maryland as one of the last of the popular “Houseboat” models built. Originally
named GERIFAY, she served as Committee Boat for the 1974 Americas Cup Races in
Newport, RI.
DOVETAIL has an enclosed pilothouse and a large full-width galley on the main
deck. Her overall length is 72’ / 21.95m, with a beam of 18’ / 5.49m and a draft
of 4’5” / 1.35m, 69 gross tons / 55 net tons. Her hull is artfully built of
steam-bent oak framing, with double planked mahogany — 3/8-inch inner mahogany
planks and 3/4-inch outer mahogany planks with a core if marine grade 5200 in
between. Impeccably well-maintained, DOVETAIL is a classic yacht with fully
modernized systems.
DOVETAIL was fully restored & refit RI from 2017 to 2020 (at a cost of well over
$1 million):
2017-2018: DOVETAIL underwent a major refit with the premiere Trumpy experts at
McMillen Yachts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. During this time more than half the
bottom was re-planked below the waterline and the bronze thru-hull valves were
replaced and topsides wooded. She was also repowered with twin Cummins QSM-11
650 hp diesel engines, the engine room was fully-refit and DOVETAIL received new
gears, shafts, props, and a new exhaust system. The electric service was
upgraded to 100-amp with a 24vDC battery system. All other systems refurbished /
serviced: Naiad 254 hydraulic stabilizers, hydraulic bow thruster, Spectra
water-maker, Cruisair Air Conditioning, windlass.
2018-2019: Additional mechanical and cosmetic upgrades were completed in Stuart,
FL and in Portsmouth, RI including a new redesigned galley installed and
complete hull painted in 2019 with white Alexseal. Also in 2019, McMillin
replaced the bottom planking structure around the rudder ports and new steering
engineering was installed.
During 2020 & 2021 DOVETAIL owners cruised in New England during the summers and
Florida & the Bahamas during winters, with ongoing maintenance to keep her in
pristine condition.
2022 she received a full varnish and in 2023 all new teak decks were laid on the
aft deck, which was previously painted non-skid. The engines were fully serviced
in November 2023.
Engine hours as of 15th March 2024 the are 2161 on the port engine, 2158
starboard engine. Generator hours on the twin Northern Lights 25 KW
generators: 3693 hours on the port generator and 1610 hours on the starboard
generator.
DOVETAIL walk-thru: On the main deck forward of the galley is the wheelhouse
with a well laid-out dashboard with easily accessible instruments, a long helm
bench on the aft bulkhead, teak & holly sole, an opening center window and port
and starboard wing doors. The pilothouse has excellent visibility for
operation. A forward companionway leads from the wheelhouse down to the lower
deck crew quarters, crew dinette, laundry area, abundant storage, and adjacent
easily accessible engine room.
Moving aft is the efficiently planned galley with stainless steel appliances:
glass top 5-burner stove with oven, a convection microwave, full-size French
door refrigerator with bottom freezer, stainless steel 2-drawer Fisher & Payke
dishwasher, large sink, lots of storage, pass-thru window, teak & holly soles.
Aft of the galley is the spacious and inviting salon with mahogany furnishings
and cabinetry, there is a day-head and original roll-down windows for the option
of fresh air. A pass-through window from the galley makes service efficient. The
salon opens to the aft deck which can be enjoyed “al fresco” to take in the
fresh sea-breeze, or fully enclosed with isinglass and air conditioning. The aft
deck has a wet-bar, a buffet, and an icemaker for enjoying sunset cocktails or
dining alfresco.
From the salon stairs lead down to the guest accommodations that includes the
full beam owner’s stateroom aft, furnished with a centerline queen bed and
ensuite head & shower and ample built in storage. Moving forward on the lower
deck are two identical guest cabins port and starboard each with 2 twin beds,
built in storage & an ensuite head & shower.
